Until recently, scientists thought cannibalism was a rare response to starvation or other extreme stress. Well-known cannibals like the praying mantis and black widow were considered bizarre exceptions. But now, we know they more or less represent the rule. Bill Schutt shows how cannibalism can promote the survival of a species by reducing competition, culling the weak, and bolstering the strong.

  1. While growing up I got an aquarium for my room ans took care of it. Pieced all the techmical stuff together, Furnished and decorated it, filled it with water and of cause… fish. Guppy to be percise. 2 Male (Aoki and Akaki (meaning like blue one and red one)), and 2 female (Hanni and Nanni (two girls from a childrens book)) and I expelicitly bought the female ones pregnant so I can have even more fish for the price of them. (And I also bought one of those glas-kissing-catfish and named him Kyuba, wich means vaccuum cleaner.
So, not long after, I saw tini tiny little new fischy friends in my tank and tought "Nyaaaaaw so cute! * w * " and exactly as I was totaly draged into that adorableness, the Mother came and took a swhoosh, swallowing the very bunch I was watching in a whole. o.o
